The Truth Behind Personal Injury Treatments

May 3rd, 2008 by zeremclendon

By Steve Sabes Plaintiffs who are injured in auto accidents, on the job, on premises, or other unfortunate events will seek treatment for their injuries. Every injured claimant should know that the first visit to a care provider might be the most important step with regard to their claim. On the first visit, the initial diagnosis will greatly define the extent of the injuries. For seriously injured claimants with broken bones and/or lacerations, the injuries are obvious and often severe. On the other hand, injured claimants who sustain less serious but sometimes equally as painful injuries such as strains and sprains, disc bulges and herniations, the diagnoses are not so clear and the treatment prescribed is less obvious. Plaintiffs that fall into the category of less serious injuries often seek therapy from chiropractic centers and/or other rehabilitation services. While these practitioners often provide relief and speed the recovery from injury, claimants must be careful not to over treat their injuries. Why is this a problem? Over treatment of an injury will reduce the amount of settlement proceeds that you should receive. Here is how it works. Lets say that you have sustained a strained back that includes some disc bulge. As long as there are not any highly irregular circumstances, the defendant insurance company will have a pre-determined amount that they will be willing to settle for. This amount is not going to change much during the settlement negotiation. In the meantime, if you continue to treat and treat the injury, the medical bills will increase and increase. It is NOT true that the larger the medical bills, the larger the settlement. It depends greatly on the type of treatment. Therefore, as the amount due to the chiropractic center increases, less of the settlement will be available for you, the claimant. Lawsuit Cash Advances advice to claimants treat your injuries, get the help you need, including treatment at the chiropractic clinics and rehabilitation centers, but do not abuse and over treat, and lose out on your settlement. How to Assemble The Law Firm Puzzle

May 1st, 2008 by zeremclendon

By Allison Shields Imagine trying to do one of those 1000 (or more) piece jigsaw puzzles without looking at the picture without having any idea what the finished puzzle would look like. Now imagine that youre doing the puzzle without the picture, but not all of the pieces in the box belong to the same puzzle. How do you know which ones belong? How can you complete the puzzle effectively? Failing to develop strategic plans for your law firm is like trying to do the puzzle without knowing which pieces belong or what the end result is supposed to look like. Strategic Planning Made Easy The four steps in the EASE method of strategic planning will make your planning a breeze: Envision, Analyze, Strategize, and Evaluate. Envision the Result You Want What does a law firms strategic plan look like? Every strategic plan must start with a vision of what you want the end result to be. This is the first step in the EASE method Envision. The vision is like the photo on the puzzle box its a detailed picture what you want to get out of the plan. For example, if youre working on a firm business plan, youll create a vision of what you want your practice to become. It will include such things as: what youll be known for, how youll serve your clients, what areas of law youll practice in, how much revenue your firm will make, how many offices youll have, how many employees will work for the firm, and what the firms core values will be. Analyze Where You Are Now The next step in creating a plan is to Analyze your current situation. Take stock of where you are, who your best and worst clients are, what practice areas you focus on now, where your revenue comes from, how your clients are referred to you. Youll also analyze your competition: who are they? Why do clients choose you over your competition? What does your competition offer that you dont? What changes are occurring in the marketplace? What are your potential clients needs and wants? Which pieces fit with your vision, and which dont? Strategize How Youll Get To Your Vision From Where You Are Now After youve taken stock of your current position, its time to Strategize. This step consists of setting broad goals and identifying objectives that will help you reach those goals. Youll create action plans with specific deadlines for completion. The action plans break down your objectives into discrete steps, so that you can move toward those goals. For example, if a firm goal is to increase referrals and client loyalty, you must ask questions like: What kind of service do my potential clients expect? How can we provide those services in a way that distinguishes us from the competition? How can we package our services to be more attractive to our target market? Heres an example of the beginnings of what such a plan might look like: Goal: Increase client loyalty and referrals Objective 1: Create client survey program Action Plan for Objective 1: Research client surveys on the internet by September 1Write first draft of client survey by September 15 Objective 2: Improve relationships with good referral sources Action Plan for Objective 2: Create schedule for referral communications by September 7Contact three referral sources per month and schedule coffee, lunch, etc. Without goals, it is difficult to concentrate and avoid distractions. Although the goals themselves may change, having the goals is exceptionally important. In order to reduce stress, you must increase your control over your environment. Paying attention gives you much more control. Establish priorities, match skills to the challenges youre presented with. Stress comes from doing what you hate OR avoiding it. Evaluate and Revise The final step in the planning process is to Evaluate and revise the plan. Planning is an ongoing process. As your firm changes, the marketplace changes and your clients change, the plan needs to change, too. The results of the actions youve taken must be evaluated to determine whether theyve been successful, and whether theyre likely to continue to be successful. In order to evaluate, youll have to keep track of your progress as you go along. Recognize that continuous testing (and making mistakes) is the only way to determine what really works and what doesnt. Law firms often fail to set aside the time to look back to see whether their efforts have been successful, or to continue testing once they think theyve found something that works. But to improve sometimes means taking risks and changing something that works to see whether you can make it work even better. Put the Puzzle Together with EASE Using the EASE process: Envision, Analyze, Strategize, and Evaluate, you can create a plan that will help you put the pieces of your law firm puzzle together: Envision what you want create the picture of what youd like the result of the plan to be. Analyze where you are now and ascertain which pieces belong to the your vision and which dont Strategize how youll get from where you are to your vision which part of the puzzle should you work on first? How will you put the pieces together? Evaluate what youve done- determine whether you need to change to make a change, or what the next steps will be. Once you know what the end result is supposed to look like and how you plan to get there, you can concentrate on putting the pieces in place to create your vision. (c) 2007 Allison C. April 28th, 2008 by zeremclendon

By Dr.Krishna R.S Garlic ( Allium Sativum) belongs to the family Liliaceae. The plant has leaves which are long, narrow and flat like grass. The bulb is of a compound nature, consisting of numerous bulblets, known technically as ‘cloves,’ grouped together between the membraneous scales and enclosed within a whitish skin, which holds them as in a sac. It is referred to by different names in ayurveda . The names describe its qualities. It is known as Rasona (Rasena vunaha = as it is devoid of amla rasa or sour taste) Ugraghandhi ( ugra Gandhi = as it has strong pungent smell ) It has Snigdha (sticky), teekshna (penetrating) , pichhila (slimy), guru (heavy), sara (quickly spreading) qualities. It has all rasas (tastes) except amla (sour). It reduces kapha and vata but it should be used with lot of precautions in persons who have pitta prakruti and in patients who are suffering from rakta, pitta disorders. Ancient greeks used to place garlic on stones at cross roads as a supper for Hecate(Greek goddess of the three paths, guardian of the household, protector of everything newly born, and the goddess of witchcraft ).According to Pliny garlic and onion were invoked as deities by the Egyptians while taking oaths. According to a Mohammedan legend ‘when Satan stepped out from the Garden of Eden after the fall of man, Garlic sprang up from the spot where he placed his left foot, and Onion from that where his right foot touched.’ Garlic contains pungent, volatile, essential oil. Relationship Advice: How to Stir Up a Conflict in Your Relationship

April 26th, 2008 by zeremclendon

By Jeff Herring Relationship conflict can be a scary thing for many couples. Recently I was working with a couple that was doing pretty well, yet hada brief conflict earlier in the week. Before we could even celebratetheir progress one of them wanted to jump right in to talking about theconflict earlier in the week. I asked them to stop for a moment and consider something: are youbringing this up to finish cleaning up the conflict or only serve tostir up the conflict? How to Stir Up the Conflict “Stir it up; little darlin’ stir it up” - Bob Marley There are several mistakes couples usually make that will stir up aconflict instead of cleaning it up. Bring up the same conflict over and over, called conflict rehashing. Bring it up when other conflicts arise. Beat ‘em with your “angry stick” Tell other people about it until you get someone on your side. It’s OKto talk to others to try to get some clarity, but not to rally people toyour side. Wedding Gifts That Make A Statement

April 25th, 2008 by zeremclendon

By L Hayes When it comes to wedding gifts, a good rule of thumb is, never give something you wouldn’t also love to receive. Certain items would be welcome in virtually any home, whatever the decor. Here’s a partial list: l. A great lamp. Statistically, eight out of ten US homes are under supplied with lamps. Your very welcome gift could be an affordable table lamp from Ikea that is midnight blue, or black or maroon from the top of its shade to the base of its bottom; or an artsy Tizio lamp, that leggy metal elbow light that is right in any kind of room; or an adjustable apothecary-style floor lamp that can stand quietly beside or behind a chair or sofa, giving perfect reading light. There is lots of room for personal expression in this category and your wedding gift will enjoy some serious longevity. 2. A framed mirror. Based on your knowledge of the couple, you might choose a sleek, classic gilt frame with minimal detailing, or an ornate Rococo frame. The new-age color of preference for weddings is silver or pewter. For lovers of country, go with an antique pine window frame mirror. The point is, this is a piece that can be hung in any room of a new house - from the foyer to the dining room to bedrooms to a hallway. 3. A wonderful vase. Pay attention to the shape of vases because it controls whether flowers will stand tall or droop gracefully. A wedding gift vase will be brought out hundreds of times over the years, usually on other happy or celebratory occasions. 4. A coat tree. There are many wonderful antique hall trees to be found, as well as contemporary pieces. These useful wedding gifts can be used to hold towels in a good-sized bathroom, or coats in a closet-less hall. They are also versatile enough to be used for belts, scarves or ties in the bedroom. You really can’t go wrong. 5. Small tables or benches. For inspiration here, look in a catalogue or store. There’s hardly a home that couldn’t do with a graceful demilune table or console. Again, it’s a piece that can travel from dining room to foyer to a bedroom, or even to the bath. If you’re not sure about the mahogany finish, choose a more neutral glass and iron table, or a painted country look. An upholstered bench makes a great front hall piece (paired with the leggy console), or can stand at the foot of the bed, at the dressing table vanity, or in an awkward corner of a living room. If you’re not sure about the fabric, give it with plain muslin. Why not fill a case with a variety of fabulous wines and present it with a pair of glasses or candlesticks? Give an artsy CD storage unit, or a boom box to listen to while painting your room. Other wedding gift ideas include: funky bar stools for a kitchen island; a series of rectangular storage baskets with leather handles; a gorgeous silk ‘tree’ or folding screen for a bare corner - you get the idea. Finally, do a little research, ask a few questions, and then go make a statement. The newlyweds will appreciate your thoughtfulness for years to come. Deliverance

April 22nd, 2008 by zeremclendon

By Mellody Davis Deliverance is to be rescued or salvation. Thanks be to Jesus that he showed us the way to save our souls from sin. We must come to the realization that God is real, powerful, and will deliver us from the woes of this world. Let look at Psalms 72:12 it says For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence for precious is their blood in his sight. It said in Psalms 79:8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for you names sake. Now look at Psalms 3:3 it says But you are a shield around me, O Lord; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. I lay down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side. Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my god! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked. From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people. In Psalms 18:2 it says The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. Look at Psalms 33:6 it says By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations, he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purpose of his heart through all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance. From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earthhe who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do. No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. Now look at Psalms 34:4 it says I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry; the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all; he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken. Now in the book of Psalms 40:13 it says Be pleased, O Lord, to save me; O Lord, come quickly to help me. May all who seek to take my live be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. May those who say to me, Aha! Aha! Be appalled at their own shame. But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. May those who love your salvation always say, The Lord be exalted! Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. Your are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay. Look at Psalm 144:7 it says Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful. Now look at Psalms 37:4 it says Delight yourselves in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fretit leads only to evil. At verse 12 it says The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming. Now at verse 16 it says Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous. In the book of 2Corinthians (I suggest reading the whole chapter.)1:9 it says Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened the we might not relay on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many. Now look at verse 18 it says But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not Yes and No. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by me and Silas and Timothy, was not Yes and No, but in him it has always been Yes For no matter how may promises God has made, they are Yes in Christ. And so through him the Amen is spoken by us to the glory of God. To conclude look at Matthew 10:22 it says All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. I have to say this is why I pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. Amen. What is Online Surveys and How it Can Help Us?

April 21st, 2008 by zeremclendon

By Mirza Mohammed Ali Baig Online surveys are the ideal tool to meet the demands of any campaign. Perfect for market research, a powerful marketing and monitoring tool. Whether campaigning for government or for election to the school council online surveys are the easy and effective election tool that will benefit any campaign. Use surveys to discover more about the electorate, to identifying the issues that really concern them so that each campaign can be tailored to reach the hearts and minds of the voters. For any survey it is important to decide from the beginning what the objective of the survey is and when considering conducting a survey in support of a particular candidate consider if the purpose of the survey is to discover what the issues are or is the survey to be used to promote the candidates image and policies? Different segment of an election process survey: Pre-Campaign before campaigning begins a survey is an ideal method to investigate the voters and to determine what the important issues are likely to be. To gain a wider response across the whole political spectrum the survey will preferably be conducted through an independent channel so that peoples opinion of a particular candidate does not influence the research. For a political survey it is essential that the demographics of those surveyed are established as different groups are likely to have both common and varied views. With demographic information there is an opportunity to establish what the main issues are. A pre-campaign survey will be able to monitor the mood of the voters. Some may, if asked, even indicate who they are likely to vote for in a future election. By listening to the electorate a campaign can www.article-submission.info be planned better and will allow printed and oral marketing to be properly www.acting-international.com targeted at the issues that people want addressed. For candidates that appear out of step with the electorate surveys can provide a measure of how much effort will be required and in what areas so that people are convinced and change their views. Campaign survey during a campaign an online survey is an effective way to market a candidates position. Tradition methods of leafleting rely on the recipient reading and taking onboard the message. Leaflets are one way marketing effort and more often than not dismissed and discarded along with other junk mail. With the new breed of online survey web sites generators multiple online surveys can be created and published in minutes making it feasible to target specific groups on specific issues. There is no longer a need to devise a one size fits all survey. Surveys that promote policies that are aimed at retired voters can be sent to retired voters, while younger people can be sent surveys that promote the candidates policy on issues that are only important to them. Using the pre-campaign survey data the undecided voter can be targeted and engaged with perhaps the oppositions policy being used to highlight the benefit of voting for a candidate. Blessing and Cursing

April 19th, 2008 by zeremclendon

By Reginald Johnson The tongue and every word we speak contain the power of life or death. Words have the power to bring life and blessing, or to bring death and cursing through the energy they contain. Our intention is paramount because while people notice our outward action, God looks on the heart. Sometimes, our intention and inward motives are more important than what we actually say or do. It is intention that gives words their power. Intention is the inward motive or energy behind the thought or word. Words combined with love, wisdom and Divine inspiration are like apples of gold on trays of silver. Offered to a weary hearer, they become beautiful, living, hope-bearing morsels that nourish the soul. By the same token, when words are combined with hatred, jealously or selfish motives they are like the fig tree that was cursed and withered; they have the ability to bring death, discouragement and despair to the hearer. Which would you rather have spoken to you? The Benediction You may have attended a church service where the minister pronounced a benediction or blessing at the end, e.g. “May God bless and keep you.” Blessings and curses are prayers spoken over another person, place or thing. Most people don’t believe these words actually mean or do anything, but in reality our words do confer blessing or cursing. These prayers are a compilation of precisely structured and arranged words. A benediction to bless can be poetic, artistic and very eloquently presented at special occasions such as at a bar mitzvah, a graduation ceremony or a wedding. A wicked incantation may be presented in tribal countries that use an evil form of voodoo to combat enemies. I am not saying that all tribal nations who practice voodoo intend harm to others. There is a such thing as good voodoo, witchcraft and spells that are beneficial. On the other hand, I have been in Christian prayer circles that placed a curse on another person because the words spoken violated their free will and asked God to bring about hardship or sickness that would make that person repent of their sins! Blessing and cursing does not have to be a formal petition to God conducted during a ceremony or spoken directly over another person. It can be something as simple as an email. Im referring to those nutty emails that have a wonderful blessing in them. Then as you scroll through, there is message such as, if you don’t send this to at least 5 people in 5 minutes, you will have bad luck for years. Let me remind you that a blessing should never threaten you with a curse. Those emails that curse you if you dont respond are the lowest form of spiritual bribery. They are a manipulative way to get you to do something by using fear tactics. Whenever you get one of those emails, just delete it. If you feel you must forward it, then at least cut and remove the curse before you send it. I have never responded to this type of email and I have had extremely good luck. I believe that a message or blessing in the Kingdom will always reach you when you need it. A Formal Blessing Speaking a blessing over someone was a common practice to the early Jewish people. They believed that when God blessed something, He gave it life, and when he cursed something, it died. However, a simple observation of someone or their situation is not an indication as to whether they have been cursed or blessed. When people have sickness or hardship, it does not mean they are cursed. By the same token, if someone is well and prosperous it does not mean that God has blessed or favored them. As you will read in chapter 10, experiencing difficult circumstances in life shows one of two things: that the person decided before incarnating to learn his or her lessons through difficulty, or that the person is not aware of the Law of Attraction and is manifesting by default. You may be familiar with the story of Esau and Jacob in the 28th chapter of Genesis in the Old Testament of the Bible. They were twin brothers born only minutes apart to Isaac and Rebekah. The blessing of the birthright belonged to the firstborn, Esau, but Rebekah wanted her favorite son, Jacob, to have it. She devised a plan and disguised him as his older brother and sent him to his father with his favorite meal. Isaac was old and blind and didnt realize that he had blessed the wrong son until later when Esau came in expecting to receive the blessing. Even though it was gained by trickery, the blessing of the firstborn held power and came true. Some blessings and curses may not be so consciously presented. They can be given without one even being aware of it. When you are talking about someone with another person and one of you says something like, I hope it all works out well for her. She is a wonderful person, and Id like to see her really prosper. Do you realize you just blessed that person without their knowledge? On the flip side of the coin, cursing can be done in the same manner while standing in checkout line at the grocery store or driving in traffic. I am not talking about using profanity, but about the cursing of others with words and thoughts that throws energetic slander and hatred towards them. Anytime you speak or wish evil, harm or ruin to another person, you are cursing them. Doesnt everyone have enough stress without sending these poison darts? But they have cursed me, you might defend. Thats all the more reason to bless them. Jesus taught his disciples to bless those that curse you even your enemies. Doing so transmutes the harmful energy to beneficial energy for both the receiver and the sender. Thats powerful! The Bible used to scare me half to death when I was a teenager because I knew that Gods righteousness condemned sinners. I understood as humans we were under divine condemnation because each has rejected the revelation of God through salvation in Christ. So essentially, we were cursed if we were not under the umbrella of a fire insurance policy against going to Hell. It didnt help growing up in a strict Methodist environment and later to an A.M.E. Church. One associate minister used to get so passionate about his sermon delivery, I thought, Oh my God, one day hes gonna have a heart attack if he keeps this up. Yes, he had a heart attack while I was sitting in the front row. I saw him pass out in the middle of his sermon. I sat there stunned because it just crossed my mind the week before and I did not say it aloud, only in my mind. Although I was not aware of the principles at the time, I felt some inner connection in what I said and what happened to Reverend Lewis. Were my words that powerful that I had cursed him? The heart attack did not kill him, thank God, but he left the church for a long time before preaching again. Needless to say, I left church in Washington, D.C. and moved to a galaxy far, far away Los Angeles! I was made the official spiritual advisor for a radio station in San Bernardino, California a few years ago. I visited the studio on occasion to answer a few questions from callers and sometimes in-studio guests. One of the shows hosts, a female disc jockey, asked me to read her on the air. I did so, as she requested. I made a comment about her having a baby. I had a hunch she did not believe me because she had surgery to prevent a baby from entering this world through the mother vehicle. I gave her a look of total confidence and said, Although you are in your late 30s, and believe it is impossible, I know you will have a baby girl. She looked at me doubtfully, but tried to clothe herself with an air of confidence for benefit of the listening audience in what I was telling her. When I was leaving the studio, a Bible passage hit me hard, life and death are in the tongue. (Proverbs 18:2). Last year I received a phone call from that same radio DJ who told me she was pregnant and having a baby girl and that she was in complete shock because it was impossible for her to get pregnant. Her child was waiting to be born and I saw her and spoke her into this reality with faith in the Higher Power who made everything there is. Jesus Cursed a Fig Tree Matthew 21:18-19; 20-22 and Mark 11:12-14; 20-25 says, in essence:And on the morrow, when they had come out of Bethany, he [Jesus] hungered. And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if perhaps he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season of figs. And he answered and said unto it, No man [will] eat fruit from you from now on for ever. And his disciples heard it . . .And as they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots. And Peter calling to remembrance said unto him, Rabbi, behold, the fig tree that you cursed is withered away (Mk. 11:12-14; 20-21). The followers, or disciples of Christ understood the power of words and for their benefit, Jesus was always giving them a lesson. In the above-referenced passage, Christ did not curse the tree as an act of intolerance. As an Ascended Master and Son of God, he was hungry and told the tree so. He indicated that since the leaves came first without fruit, no one would ever eat from the tree again. His disciples listened carefully, hanging onto every word. Jesus demonstrated the power of words. Some people will judge this decision and think that the supernatural power of Christ was wasted on a vulgar demonstration before the disciples. However, Christ knew that he had (and we have) authority and dominion over all creation. There are plenty of other stories about the life of Jesus that are undocumented that would fill large volumes if they were to be printed. Other manuscripts such as The Book of Thomas have been found that show even more mysteries of the secret doctrines of Christ. What we now call the scriptures contained in the Bible are only a part of what has been written about Jesus Christ. Many people do not realize that some accounts of his life were omitted from ancient texts by the Nicene Council for the purpose of regulating the Church and the government under one belief system during the reign of Constantine. In reading any text or hearing any message, be sure to listen to the voice of God within to be sure that what is being presented resonates with your spirit. Binding and Loosing I mention binding and loosing here because it has to do with blessing and cursing. I want to remind you that words spoken on earth, have an effect in other realms of the universe. In Matthew 16:19-20 Jesus said, I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Binding (restraining and holding back) and loosing (allowing or setting free) may be applied to anything or anyone. Having God and Goddess as our Divine parents, we are born with the power to invoke their assistance to bind all forces of darkness on earth, and in ourselves and others, as well as to set free or loosen captives. These are laws or commands that we may execute via our free will. We have the power to bless people and send the light of love to them physically and remotely as well as to curse them. In Wicca there is a statement of the same nature, as above, so below. Whatever we bind or loose on earth is also bound or loosed in heaven. I believe binding and loosing also has to do with granting karmic grace as Jesus did when He forgave the sins of others. When we forgive, we set people free; many times ourselves as well as the offender. I am always amazed that the multiple meanings attached to English words. In the case of binding and loosing these words can mean the same thing since they share similar meanings. Let me explain. Most people think of binding as the act of restraining or controlling something, and some may pray that the powers of evil be bound. Loosing is generally referred to as unwrapping, exposing or setting something free; such as releasing a bird from its cage. However, binding can also be used positively, to secure, wrap or embrace something good. With this principle, you could envision yourself being securely bound to love and kindness if you wish to attract those virtues to yourself. By the same token, the principle of loosing can mean to divide or separate from. You could use the principle of loosing in this manner for removing or separating yourself from limiting or negative patterns of thinking. Binding and loosing is a simple matter of perspective. By Gum

By Peter Shuttlewood Since ancient times natives have chewed on tree sap, beeswax, parafin wax, spruce wax and chicle, the sap from the Sapodilla tree. Chewing Gum, the moden day equivalent, may have still been a relatively tasteless confectionery had it not been for one very smart salesman. William Wrigley Jr. came to Chicago in the spring of 1891. He was 29 years old, had $32 in his pocket, and possessed unlimited energy and great talent as a salesman. He started out selling soap. As an extra incentive to merchants to carry Wrigleys soap, he offered them free baking powder. When baking powder proved to be more popular than soap, he switched to the baking powder business. One day, Mr. Wrigley got the idea to offer merchants free chewing gum with each can of baking powder. The chewing gum proved more popular than the baking powder and the rest is history. In 1893 Wrigleys released Juicy Fruit followed a few months later by Spearmint gum. By 1920 construction began on the Wrigley Building. A symbol of Chicago featured in countless articles, books, films, and television programs, the Wrigley Building and its distinctive towers are an architectural favorite among Chicagos residents and visitors. During World War II, company president Philip Wrigley led an unusual move to support U.S. troops and and took Wrigleys Spearmint, Doublemint and Juicy Fruit off the civilian market and dedicated the entire output to the U.S. Armed Forces. Thanks to a strong remember the wrapper advertising campaign, sales soared again after the war ended. In 1984 Extra Sugarfree Gum was introduced as consumers became more concerned with the sugar content in foods and especially confectionery. When spat on the ground, chewing gum will stick firmly and can only be removed with great difficulty. For this reason, the sale of chewing gum has been prohibited in Singapore since 1992. In 2004, Wrigleys purchased the Life Savers and Altoids businesses from Kraft Foods and it now sells its products in more than 180 countries and maintains 14 factories in various countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the Philippines, France, Kenya, Taiwan, China, India, Poland, and Russia. Today, Australians now chew more than 120 million packs of Wrigleys gum per year. The newest flavours Juicy Fruit Citronic and Strappleberrry sound more like electronic parts than gum. Herbert Gintis: The Flip Side of Altruism

April 11th, 2008 by zeremclendon

By Chhavi Sachdev Economist Herbert Gintis studies why people do the things they do using game theory and mathematical models. An emeritus professor at the University of Massachusetts, Gintis has also taught at the Santa Fe Institute and Barnard College. The author of Game Theory Evolving and co-author of the forthcoming title, The Cooperative Species: Human Sociality and its Evolution, Gintis believes that most people are predisposed to cooperate and be altruistic, and they arent even aware of it. Altruistic tendencies have a nastier flip side as well, but thats all part of what makes society work, according to Gintis. How did you get interested in studying altruism? I studied all of the behavioral sciences biology, psychology, sociology, political science, economics, and anthropology and I thought that it was crazy that these fields could have completely different theories of how people behave. Not only different, theyre contradictory. Were part of the Network of the Nature and Evolution Process. About 18 people work for it economists, biologists, anthropologists, psychologists. We use the experimental game theory to see what people want to do, what their preferences are. What have you found about human beings and their preferences? Economists have a model of choice thats called the rational actor model. It generally assumes that people are selfish. In fact, thats a very important part of it. And one of the things we wanted to do is test whether or not that is the case. We found out that it is not the case. Its a rather very interesting phenomenon: People tend to be predisposed to cooperate with others at a cost to themselves as long as others will also cooperate. And people are willing to punish others when they do not cooperate. The reason humans are so successful is normally attributed to the fact that theyre smart. The reason theyre smart is because humans operate in complex groups. The reason they can operate in complex groups is that they have strong reciprocity: Not only do they share, but theyre willing to punish non-sharers. If you look at the whole range of social species, you find that punishing is very important. Take bees. You always think of the hive as the big social collective, everybody does what theyre supposed to do. But thats not true. Workers often try to lay eggs, even though only the queen is supposed to lay eggs. If workers lay eggs, there are other workers that run around, eat the eggs, then punish the workers that laid the eggs. Wherever you find cooperation, youll also find punishment. Think of your own body. Each cell has its own self-interest to multiply. Why dont they go berserk? How do you get cells to cooperate? The answer is, you punish cells that dont cooperate. As far as we know, there is no other vertebrate species that punishes. Humans are by far the most social vertebrate species and we argue that thats why humans are so cooperative. How do you define altruism? In your work, you speak of reciprocity. What is that? An act is altruistic if it benefits another at a cost to yourself, where there is no possible mechanism whereby you could gain even in the long run somehow: Long term benefit to someone else with a long term cost to yourself. We call that altruism. By the way, it could be a long-term benefit to a group at a long-term cost to yourself. We want a definition of altruism that isnt subjective and also extends to animals. There is altruism in animals. It almost always depends on kin groups that is, youre nice to your kids, which is a biological objective. There are really two types of reciprocity. Generally, before the work we did, reciprocity meant I help you if you help me. And that, of course, is not altruism. What we study strong reciprocity is a predisposition to cooperate, even when its costly, and a predisposition to punish violators, free riders. The problem with the term altruism is that there are many forms of altruism. For instance, unconditional altruism is where I help others no matter what. I just help. Thats altruism, but its not strong reciprocity. Mostly people think altruism is goody-goody or warm and fuzzy. But, the biggest part of making society work is needing to retaliate, wanting to hurt people who hurt you. Its much more important than the precondition to cooperate, because if you dont have punishment, you cant get cooperation. Strong reciprocity can be cooperation and conditional punishment. So, we believe the heart of altruism is not only the willingness to cooperate and help empathy and caring for others but also this negative side of human nature: retaliation or retribution. Let me give you an example that you would not even think is altruistic normally, but is: road rage. What exactly do you mean by road rage and how is that altruistic? Pathologically, its when somebody behaves badly on the road and you shoot them. Usually, though, when people drive through a yellow light or are in a wrong lane, people honk their horns, shake their fists at them. Our argument is that this behavior of getting angry at another driver, who youre never going to see again, has strong reciprocity. It helps keep people honest. If you dont drive the proper way, some guy honks his horn and you feel humiliated; youve done a bad thing and you got caught. But he didnt do it because he cared about keeping people honest. He honked his horn because he was pissed at you. This is true in subjective altruism. By honking your horn or yelling at someone for doing a bad thing, this is an altruistic act. It might have cost you something, not much. But it keeps the rules of the road going. It keeps people honest, so its an altruistic act. Youre upholding the norm of fairness by hurting someone who was unfair. But you didnt do it because you wanted to uphold a norm for the group. You did it because you were angry at the guy. What about when people do something spontaneous and show genuine feelings of empathy? Our argument is that everybody is altruistic. But for most people if the cost gets sufficiently high, they stop being altruistic. We argue that everyday life has little bits of altruism all over the place. Theyre generally not that costly, but theyre extremely important. For instance, when I go on an airplane, everyone is nice to each other; theyre never going to see each other again. Why be polite? You can imagine if you put chimps on an airplane, it would be a total disaster. Why go through these little amenities: Can I help you with your bag? Let me move for you. Let me get up so you can get out and go to the bathroom. Think about it. If you put a bunch of sociopaths on an airplane, it would be a disaster. But these little amenities, in everyday life, we tend to help each other even if it doesnt cost that much. This makes society work. It may be that you really care about the other guy, and very often thats the case. Human beings notion of empathy is very strong. And thats what altruism is. Its wanting to help people at a cost to yourself but also punish people at a cost to yourself when theyre behaving in an anti-social manner. And then the question is, how can human beings be this way? No other species is like this. And thats where the biology comes in. You have to show that groups in which you have a strong reciprocator, an altruist, will do better than groups that dont have altruism. Is that how game theory fits in? The main thing game theory does is provide a methodology for experiments. After that, youve got all the biology, genetics, sociology. But game theory pervades everything we do. Theres a whole theory on that called behavioral game theory. Tell us about your recent findings on how altruism is transmitted. Were basically very hard-nosed mathematical behaviorists. We take the economic model of the rational actor and we put it through the hoops. Sociologists have a concept called socialization, which means the internalization of norms, which is completely opposite from every other behavior. Theres no such thing in biology or economics or political science or anthropology. It seems to me that the principle of socialization was one of the established behavioral universal principles in academic sociology. What we propose is that human beings have this capacity to be programmed. Humans are the only ones where humans can want things just because they were socialized to want them want to be fair, want to share, want to help your group, want to be patriotic, want to be honest, want to be trustworthy, want to be cheerful when they are costly to our selves. If youre honest as a principle, thats good for everybody else and it costs you. So being honest is part of strong reciprocity. Where does this come from? Within a complex society, the general approach to this is gene-culture co-evolution. In biology, you get genetic information. In sociology or anthropology, you get cultural information. But really, in human society, they go together. Genetic evolution leads to culture. In that culture, given strong reciprocity, you can be rewarded for being nice or for cooperating. So cultural evolution can lead to genetic evolution. Human beings become nicer and more reciprocal and more honest. So, you get this whole dialectic back-and-forth between cultural evolution and genetic evolution and the product is human beings. As a result, you get this very complex society, where if individuals dont learn to share or learn to be honest, the system punishes them. People who are programmable, then, are more fit than people who are not programmable. So in that context of programmability, socialization the internalization of norms becomes the interest of fitness. If you brush your teeth because your parents told you to or you turned the other cheek, because in the long run that pays off, then you are more fit than your neighbors who are sociopaths. The interesting thing is, once you get people who are programmable, you can program them to do a lot of things, even things that arent in their interest. You can program people to be honest, even when its in their self-interest sometimes not to be honest. A lot of people wont be honest. By programmability, you can get people to be more altruistic than they would ever be if they were self-interested. Now we have all these suicide bombers. Thats completely obvious. You get these people who are programmable and you can program them to be willing to commit suicide. You could never do that to an animal, not willingly. Our argument is that this is one more kind of collective social mechanism that allows us to cooperate. People dont like to see others suffer. After 9/11, you saw in NYC, the whole city rise up, people helping each other. Its just a spontaneous empathy. Empathy itself is the result of gene-culture coevolution, because, again, people are empathetic; They help in the short run because they feel like it; they feel good helping. But in the long run it helps them because people help back or some phenomenon allows empathy to be fitness enhancing. I think thats more important than what they were taught by their parents. But some of that can come in too. Chhavi Sachdev is international editor at Science & Theology News.
